Coin Collecting Is Fun!
US Coin Grading

Grading coins is not an exact science. All grades are subjective. We attempt to give you the best grading guidelines possible when we estimate the grade of a coin. We follow the guidelines outlined in the Red Book and make our grading decisions based on visual inspection of the coin itself and analysis of magnified digital images. If you would like to see the criteria we use to grade each type of coin and what the grading points are, please click on a coin below.

These are taken verbatim from The Official Red Book Guide to United States Coins, 58th Edition by R.S. Yeoman, edited by Kenneth Bressett, and published by Whitman Publishing in 2004. Where grades existed in the 57th Edition but were not in the 58th Edition, we left the grade provided by the 57th edition rather than remove it. You will notice that some grades are not specified. We may assign an "in between" grade to a coin that has more detail than one grade but does not quite reach the qualifications for the next.

Please remember that coin grading is subjective. When there is a doubt, we tend to the conservative grade and we always list the reasons for the grade assigned to each coin. If you believe the grade to be different than stated, bid according to your own judgment. We do not claim to be professional graders - we just want to describe our coins accurately. For this reason, we supply some of the best pictures on eBay to aid you in making an informed decision before you bid.

To see the criteria we use for our grades, click on the type of coin below and you will automatically be redirected to that portion of the page. For those not specified, the general guidelines of the A.N.A. Grading System are used as outlined below.
